Ridge Augmentation

Here at Dallas Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery we conduct ridge augmentation procedures on patients who have had their jawbones injured, damaged, or disfigured in one way or another. If you need dental implants, we have to ensure your jawbone is in perfect condition. A ridge augmentation procedure might be performed to ensure that is the case.

Ridge augmentation might involve a bone graft as well. Bone grafting is necessitated by the loss of jawbone volume. The aim is to ensure there is enough jawbone for dental implants to be anchored into. In general, ridge augmentation encompasses all procedures conducted to rebuild the jaw.

Ridge Augmentation Process

Your jawbone might be affected in an accident, or when your tooth is being pulled out. The ridge augmentation procedure is not complex if there is no bone graft needed. It might be a simple procedure of realigning and screwing together a broken jaw. The procedure might also feature re-shaping the tooth sockets in the jaw in preparation for the new prosthetic teeth.

The procedure is a bit complex when a bone graft is needed. It is usually painless and not very invasive, however. The procedure is completed by our dental surgeons at our dental clinic. The graft is either obtained from your own body, another person’s body, or from another species. Your body tissue is best as it fuses with the rest of your jawbone and heals faster. The latter two are considered when the size of the bone needed is quite significant, or when the patient does not want to undergo a graft extraction procedure.

To fix the graft, our surgeon has first to split your jawbone. There are many misconceptions about the procedure due to the splitting. Many claim that the surgeon breaks your jaw. That’s not entirely true. Our surgeons split the jawbone to create space for the bone graft. The process is also known as jaw expansion. A new bone grows over the graft, and they fuse into one. In some instances, the dental implant is placed while the graft is being placed, and they are left to fuse.

In the case of a broken jaw, the jaw is fastened together using titanium screws and wires. These screws and wires are biocompatible and will fuse with the jawbone after a while. The jawbone will have joined together at that point.

Ridge augmentation procedures are conducted under local or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the procedure. You do not have to worry about pain or discomfort during the procedure. It might sting a little bit when the anesthesia wears off after the procedure though. However, it should not be excruciating pain.
